Basement Blues
For some time I’ve had a work station in our basement. I’ve never worked from home for more than a day or two at a time, so being in the basement gave me the opportunity to cave in and focus. After 3+ weeks, what used to be a quiet refuge has devolved into a dark, musty, dungeon. Even after adding a new comfy chair late last week, I started to dread spending 9-10 hours in this depressing hole.
After showering this morning, I reluctantly commuted down the basement steps. As I was on my third call of the day, I could see light peeking through the small glass block window behind me. It was clearly a beautiful morning and I decided I couldn’t spend ONE MORE DAY in this basement. So I enlisted my boys to help me carry my laptop, display, printer, and accessories up the steps. I temporarily took over the dining room table and positioned myself to look out the window into our back yard. Within 10 minutes, I was up and running again and ready to tackle the world.
The change of scenery completely changed my perspective. My energy went through the roof and I slayed work for the next 8 hours. The lesson? Even the smallest adjustments can bring forth big changes.
Maybe it’s time you make a minor adjustment to your current routine. Even incremental improvements are worth the effort.
