Top 10 Reasons HarryB is a Badass
My little guy turned 10 today. I’m not going to say the time flew by because in all actuality parenting is hard. Occasionally I wake up and suddenly realize, “oh shit, I have two sons,” while wondering why anybody left me responsible for innocent children. But in all reality, I’ve earned my parenting stripes over the last decade in part because Harry keeps me on my toes.
In honor of his step into double digits, I present to you the Top Ten Reasons HarryB is a Badass.
HarryB is financially savvy. He’s always angling a chore to make extra money and scrimps and saves, enjoying having money in his wallet more than the momentary pleasure of a purchase.
HarryB is determined. Even though I frequently want to strangle him because he’s stubborn, he has no problem pushing through adversity to go after what he wants.
HarryB is handy. From the time he was a little guy, he’s had a full-size toolbox and knows how to use its contents. Hell, my brother, Jeremy, bought him a cordless drill for his 8th birthday.
HarryB is a great date. When Jason and Ollie attend motor sports, Harry and I take the time to go on hot dates. Harry holds doors, walks on the outside of the sidewalk, and offers to help with my chair. He’s a natural gentleman.
HarryB has a strong sense of justice. When he witnesses something he doesn’t think is fair, Harry will speak up for what is right, especially if it is a disagreement with his brother. Or more importantly, if he thinks someone is not being fair to his brother.
HarryB is competitive. Baseball, boardgames, basketball, and blackjack, Harry strives to win and usually does.
HarryB is smart. His ability to look at the world through his own lens allows him to solve problems in ways I would never consider. He also understands math on a deeper level than I ever have and even though he’s dyslexic he works harder every day to get better at reading.
HarryB is kind. He has a way of sensing when I’ve had a tough day and he gently pats my arm with his hand. The light tough and caring energy makes me forget whatever was weighing on me, at least for the moment.
HarryB is a good brother and friend. He’s always looking out for people he cares about, making sure they have a drink if they’re thirsty or selecting the gum flavor he knows his brother likes.
HarryB has a great sense of style. Whether it’s cutting firewood at Grandma’s farm or going out to dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse, Harry has the right attire. He’s as comfortable in a tie as he is in cowboy boots or gym shorts. And he always know just what to wear.
So that’s my little guy who’s not so little anymore. At 10 he’s closer to high school graduation than diapers and will be driving fast and chasing ladies in no time. But right now, I’m still his favorite and I’m holding onto that as long as I can. Happy birthday, HarryB!
